Learning a language is one of the most important things you can do - Gary Lineker

  • "MASTERING a language is one of the most important things you can do!", says MOTD presenter Gary Lineker

  • "I had realised that players at foreign clubs who immerse themselves in the culture do better on the pitch than those who don’t."

  • Sports pundit Gary Lineker is among a host of famous faces who have signed up to teach kids on CBBC show Celebrity Supply Teacher.

"Learning a language is one of the most important things you can do", Gary Lineker told The Sun.

"I couldn’t speak a word of Spanish when I signed for Barcelona but I knew I needed to learn the lingo.

"I had realised that players at foreign clubs who immerse themselves in the culture do better on the pitch than those who don’t."

Downloads of a new language learning app, supported by leading English teams Manchester City and Arsenal, have more than doubled since the start of the summer term, as young football fans are using their heroes as home-school inspiration.

While next week’s half term break may not offer much in the way of respite from the current challenges, the “Go And Learn” app will support youngsters wanting to stay on the ball with their language studies.

"I had a bit of a wake-up call over my lack of language skills on my first day of training.

It’s a shock to the system being in a changing room full of blokes bantering and you have no idea what they are saying.

"Luckily, the team took me under their wing. On the bus to the training grounds Barcelona keeper Andoni Zubizarreta drew a stick man and woman and taught me all the body parts."

The app puts men’s and women’s players at the heart of the content, allowing users to learn from - and with - their sporting stars. Each version features 30 interactive games initially, with up to 120 available in the coming months.

Lineker continues: "As a nation, we are not great at learning a second language, we can rest on our laurels slightly."

"But I would argue that it’s more important now than ever to learn, and at the moment we’ve all got the time to spare.

"Having a second language opens up so many opportunities to you and your kids, whether that’s working abroad or in hospitality in the UK."

Go And Learn with Manchester City and Go And Learn with Arsenal are being made free to download during the period while schools are closed in an effort to offer young people more entertaining ways to study. This opportunity extends to the Premium subscription (usual cost of £3.99 per month or £25 annually), which allows fans to access signed images from their favourite players and discounts in the club merchandise shops.

The apps are currently available to learn French and Spanish for English speakers of those modern foreign languages to improve and hone their skills. The app is also available in Arabic, French and Spanish for speakers to learn English.

The unique combination of sport and education offers a fun and entertaining experience, using the Accelerated Learning Cycle model, developed by Mudita Sports Director of Learning and renowned educationalist, Alistair Smith. Based on cognitive science, the model has been successfully used by the English FA and thousands of schools over the past 20 years.

“Science shows us how to improve the chances of recall through structured practice, spaced rehearsals and short tests,” says Smith. “GO And Learn is a winner because it starts from an understanding of the process of learning. It links learning, fun and football.”

GO And Learn with Manchester City and GO And Learn with Arsenal apps are free to download on the App Store and will be released on Android soon, with additional languages added over the coming months. All users have access to an initial 30-day free trial of the Premium content.
